Antique English Regency Green & Gold Chinoiserie Toleware Tea Canister
English metalworkers and painters in cities like London and Birmingham made decorative tin containers throughout the Georgian and Regency eras. They produced these heavy japanned pieces to store expensive imported tea leaves safely away from light and moisture in wealthy homes. Artisans built them from heavy sheet iron that was shaped, coated with layers of dark lacquer, and then hand-painted or stencilled with metallic gold designs.
Wealthy families used these large canisters in formal dining rooms and drawing rooms to keep their tea dry and secure under lock. Servants brought the tea out in smaller amounts for daily service, leaving the main containers on sideboard tables or mantels as decorative ornaments. As tastes changed and tea was imported in simpler wooden chests or cardboard boxes, these elaborate metal canisters went out of daily domestic use.
